Originated in 1950's Ethiopia, as a fusion of traditional Ethiopian Pentatonic scales with Western Jazz, Afro-Funk and Soul.
Pioneered by Nerses Nalbandian (composer, arranger, musical director of the National Theatre in Addis Ababa) and revolutionised by Mulatu Astatke who blended American Jazz and Latin rhythms with Ethiopian modes in the late 50's and 60's.
Mulatu Astatke, the 'father' of Ethio-Jazz is a multi-instrumentalist, primarily Vibraphone and Conga Drums, his passion for showcasing Ethiopian music and celebrating it's cultural roots has led to a world-wide interest in the, now thriving, Ethio-Jazz scene, inspiring a new generation of musicians.
The prints are soft, durable and colour fast, screen printed in ravishing colours using water based inks.
